It stands on a narrow finger of land between the\u00a0Grand Canal\u00a0and the\u00a0<i>Bacino di San Marco<\/i>\u00a0making the church visible when entering the\u00a0Piazza San Marco\u00a0from the water.<\/p>\n<p>In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of the\u00a0plague. As a votive offering for the city\u2019s deliverance from the pestilence, the\u00a0Republic of Venice\u00a0vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance,\u00a0Italian:\u00a0<i>Salute<\/i>). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style by\u00a0Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architect\u00a0Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631.
